Research

  1. 1) Collection of Capsicum germplasm and contruction of core collection and database
    Pepper has been cultivated worldwide and it is the most important vegetable crop in Korea. Our lab have been an agency for germplasm management of pepper after being designated by National Agrobiodiversity Center (RDA) in 2007. During this period, we have collected, characterized, and evaluated pepper germplasms from all over the world. Furthermore, we have developed DNA barcoding system to identify each germplasm and constructed database on web page (http://hortbreeders.snu.ac.kr). In recent years, we are constructing a core collection which is a germplasm set minimized in number representing the maximized genetic diversity of total germplasm for facilitating germplasm management. For this purpose, we have been developing a high throughput molecular marker set and performing the genetic analysis with over thousands of germplasm. Moreover, we are planning to evaluate the characteristics and useful trait such as disease resistance, taste, and pigment of core collection

  3. 2) Genomics research and molecular markers development
    Molecular genetics have been advanced and genomic researches for various vegetable crops are greatly progressed. Whole genome sequence (WGS) project of tomato, potato, cucumber, and Chinese cabbage had been finished and WGS of pepper have been analyzed in Korea. We analyzed whole sequences of chloroplasts and mitochondria of pepper and constructed linkage map for nuclear genome using EST-intron based molecular markers.

Supported by genomic research progress, molecular markers linked to genes controlling useful characters have been developed pepper, tomato, and Chinese cabbage. We constructed linkage map and developed molecular markers linked to restorer gene of male sterile (Rf), Tobomovirus resistance gene (L), CMV resistance gene (Cmr1 or cmr2), TSWV resistance gene (Tsw), Phytophthora resistance gene (Phyto5.1), low temperature sensitive gene (sy-2) in pepper, genic male sterile gene (ms15) in tomato, and TuMV resistance gene (trs) in Chinese cabbage. Furthermore, we are trying to identify these genes.
